Alafia River Corridor South Nature Preserve

5 Stops

Alafia River Corridor Nature Preserve is a beautiful 4,070 acre nature preserve split into two sections by Lithia Pinecrest Road. The preserve encompasses lands along the Alafia River east of the Bell Shoals Bridge, extending upstream along the North Prong into Polk County and along the South Prong to Jameson Road. This land was previously used for cattle grazing and to mine phosphate, and some of the hilly terrain left over from the old mine still remains. Almost 10 miles of hiking and equestrian trails wind through pine flatwoods and oak hammock in the south section of the preserve and hikers often see lots of wildlife along these trails, including deer, owls, many bird species, and of course, the ever-present American alligator!
